This book is being billed as Good Omens meets A Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet, and that's not quite accurate. While there are both demons and interstellar travelers, it is significantly darker than either of those books. Its uniqueness lies with the arcs of the characters and the obstacles they face. Katrina, the young transgender violin prodigy who yearns for acceptance and only to make music for YouTube. Shikuza Satomi, the renowned violin teacher who taken on only the most gifted of students. She has made a deal with the devil to deliver seven souls to hell. If not, she herself is damned. When Katrina becomes her seventh student, she unlike any others. Lan Tran, whose family escapes from a star system at war, runs a donut shop with their alien technology. Their ship is beneath the shop, which Lan captains, hoping one day to return home. However, fate intervenes when Lan and Skikuza develop strong feelings for each other. The inclusion of the LBGTIQI+ community in this book is dealt with in a moving and compassionate way, by both illustrating the hardship that transgender individuals face every day and the ease in which Shikuza and Lan begin a relationship. The pacing and prose are excellent. Told from the third person point of view, we are privy to multiple character’s thoughts in each chapter. It was never confusing; it was pure perfection. As the story unfolds, it develops into thrilling and compelling story of these three women coming together and facing down what haunts them. I highly recommend the Light from Uncommon Stars. - 3.0 out of 5 stars from Tammy Goodwin -- Weird : It's really hard to describe this book. There were comparisons to Good Omens, but I don't really see it. There are a few funny lines and it's a little irreverent, but it's a totally different tone. Katrina is a very modern girl with very modern problem. It's hard to say if she's realistic as she lives a very niche life. The Queen of Hell was a very confusing character, I guess the moral of her story is that love can change a person for the better? I would have loved more character. I want an entire book written about the Stargate Donuts family. I want to know more about their history, they were the most interesting characters. This really deserves to be a trilogy - book 1 about the aliens, book two about the Queen of Hell and this as book 3. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 14, 2021 )
